TESTS TO EVALUATE MIDDLE-EAR FUNCTION
The term acoustic immittance is used to refer to either
- acoustic admittance (the ease with which energy flows through a system) or
- acoustic impedance (total opposition to the flow of sound energy).
OBJECTIVE TESTS FOR DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSTIC APPLICATIONS
Otoacoustic emissions
It is thought that the active motility of outer hair cells serves as an
amplifier of the displacement of the cochlear partition, resulting in various
forms of otoacoustic emissions as by-products that are detectable at low
intensities.
These acoustic by-products of outer hair cell motility are often referred to
as cochlear echoes.
ELECTROCOCHLEOGRAPHY
The measurement of neuroelectric events generated by cochlear structures and
the auditory nerve in response to acoustic stimulation.
One of the main clinical applications of electrocochleography is in the
differential diagnosis of hydropic conditions of the cochlea that may be
associated with M้ni่res disease or other pathologies.
AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSE
The ABR is a surface-recorded averaged response representing the activity of
the distal portion of the auditory pathway.
The ABR reflects the activation of the auditory pathway from the cochlear
nerve through the first two or three synapses of the afferent auditory pathway.
It is an ideal tool
- To objectively determine auditory sensitivity
- To diagnose neuropathology along the auditory pathway
- To serve as a reliable intraoperative monitoring tool during surgical
procedures that place auditory structures at risk.
